About the best picture nominations - they are so umm uninspiring aren't they? As long as Babel doesn't win I'll be ok.

Pan: :D 'twas very good. I thought she did an excellent job. Mercedes and the rest of the pirate gang complicated the movie; what was most compelling was the conflict between father and daughter. Of course, that is a bit hard to dramatize because the balance of power is very uneven.

6 nominations - the Oscars are typically occasions for vigorous head-shaking, but this time not so egregious. Of course, they couldn't possibly go so far as to give "Pan's Labyrinth" a best picture nomination...Cheshire Cathttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07463645065346922684noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25135975.post-28602146763870279212007-01-24T13:12:00.000+08:002007-01-24T13:12:00.000+08:00Pan: I don't own a television :P I just watch too ...Pan: I don't own a television :P I just watch too many movies...hehe..
Oh and I was nerdily mouthing the lines all through The Merchant of Venice as well. I also felt really sad when Antonia is left alone while the others take off to, well basically, have sex. And yes, homoerotic subtext delights doesn't it?
Btw, you should totally watch Pan's Labyrinth (not just because of the similarity in names - ok bad joke). And you have been missed from my comments page. It's nice to have you back :D

Cheshire Cat: Ah, not a fan of Ms. Rai's histrionics, eh? Join the club. I wish she would take voluntary retirement.
Hmmm.....do agree with you about the screen time alloted to Mercedes. I am wondering if they emphasised Sergi Lopez's charecter more because Mercedes and Ofelia both basically represented the rebellious and idealistic?
And I loved the ending. It was heart breaking but perfect.

Airy Voices: Muahaha...yes I tend to get obsessive. Irons is the flavour of the season. Thank You for compliments on the photos and I'm glad you're liking Pamuk :)
And....umm...I read thesuperficial.com too....who doesn't?

Bricks: Well, the Shakespeare adaptations aren't new so you're not really in exile :P
Babel...well I felt it was a waste of time...but if you do see it tell me what you think.

Alok: I would reccomend Pan's Labyrinth over the other two anyday. The Queen is worth watching just for Mirren. But I'm just being repetitive. And Pamuk is good!!!! At least as far as I have read. I loved the dog bit.

oh and I was so happy to know you read gofugyourself, because I seriously doubt myself at times. The Sergi Lopez character got too much screen time (he was excellent, it's hard playing a caricature) - the movie didn't centre on the Ivana Baquero character as much as it should have. And I thought the finale was heartbreaking, despite all of del Toro's efforts to sweeten the pain.Cheshire Cathttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07463645065346922684noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25135975.post-10451752310526453862007-01-23T06:39:00.000+08:002007-01-23T06:39:00.000+08:00and here I thought I watched too much television :...and here I thought I watched too much television :)

Sigh, I cant read any of the above movie posts. I'm obsessive about spoilers :(

The only movie from your list that I've watched is The Merchant of Venice. We studied it last year in school so I was basically nerdily mouthing lines all through the movie. I agree, Jessica is portrayed much too sympathetically, but apart from that I thought it was a fabulous movie. And the scene where Jeremy Irons kisses Joseph Fiennes is absolutely fabulous.

PS: I cried in the last scene when they showed Shylock, but I've always not-so-secretly harboured a soft spot for him in my heart.Panaceahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16115631444598660814noreply@blogger.com
